Solo Cose Belle (Only Good Things) is set in a quaint town in the region of Rimini. Everyone knows each other here, and the community seems peaceful, affluent and idyllic. When a new family arrive on the eve of the Mayoral election, the town’s conservative social fabric begins to unravel. We follow Benedetta, the Mayor’s daughter, as she befriends the colourful multicultural family and even discovers romance. A need for tolerance, worldliness and empathy challenges the traditional values of the community. The clash of culture, class and values creates ample opportunity for very funny situations, and, at the same time, poignant dramatic questions are addressed. I particularly enjoyed the grumpy, well-meaning priest doing his best to support the less fortunate members of society. The film cleverly culminates the narrative in a single dramatic night where everything falls apart. A likeable and unexpectedly clever glimpse into small-town Italy.
Directed by Kristian Gianfreda
Starring Idamaria Recati, Erica Zambelli, Patrizia Bollini, Caterina Gramaglia, Barbara Abbondanza
Screening in Italian with English subtitles.
