Employing a rich and visually stunning archive of art, illustrations, interviews and elegant photography, this documentary brings to life the origins of modern ‘tourism’. It all started with Northern European aristocrats and nobility travelling to Italy in search of ‘the origins of beauty’. A visit to Italy became known as ‘A Grand Tour′ and was regarded as an essential experience in a person’s education. It was no longer Christian pilgrimages to Italy; aesthetics and education were now the main concerns. It was tourism, based on horse travel with the speed and practicalities that would have entailed.
We learn the details of these Italian journeys through the testimonies of artists, men of letters, nobles, and scholars. Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence and Naples, glimpses of the countryside, the Alps, Vesuvius with Pompeii, vestiges of Magna Graecia and the Empire, to the rural scenes and festivals of popular tradition, represented a must for lovers of painting, sculpture, architecture and landscape design.
This is indeed a Grand Tour of Italy between the 17th century and first half of the 19th century.
Directed by Francesco Invernizzi
Screening in Italian with English subtitles.
