Ti Mangio il Cuore (Burning Hearts) is an arresting new take on the mafia genre. Director Pippo Mezzapesa takes an ancient tale and creates something exhilarating and original. A mafia-western-romance of forbidden love set in sunburned rural Puglia. Young lovers from rival families are at the centre of the narrative but their passions will have violent consequences. Themes of retribution, kinship, control and generational rebellion emerge to fuel the fire. It is an undoubtedly aesthetically impressive film in this genre. Every shot and sequence are meticulously curated in stunning black and white. The Italian title translates as “I’ll Eat Your Heart”, which more closely describes the ignited Latin passions of the Puglia setting. The sensual femme fatale at the story’s centre, Marilena, is played pitch-perfectly by the hugely successful Italian singer Elodie. This is unquestionably a bold new voice in a crowded genre.
Directed by Pippo Mezzapesa
Starring Elodie, Francesco Patanè, Michele Placido, Francesco Di Leva
Screening in Italian with English subtitles.
